I have to say, I rarely get 'wowed' by venues, they all kind of seem the same to me, maybe i've seen too many but Le Vieux Moulin in Rigaud,(Qc) is a cut above the rest.
When I first arrived I was greeted by Douglas with a great big 'good morning' and a smile no one can fake. He seemed so happy in his rubber boots, on his lawn tractor taking care of his sprawling estate. I couldn't help but wonder how long it must take to cut the grass there, surely it's a whole day affair..
Douglas showed us to the main room and I got straight to work. This wedding was different from the rest, no white roses and calla lilies, the bride knew exactly what she wanted when she first put foot in our shop. Originally someone in the family had offered to make the centerpieces for her but we convinced them otherwise and we're thanked later on for that exact decision. Who really has time to make centerpieces on the day before their wedding, let's get real...
After I was done decorating the main room I headed outdoors to take in the beauty of this old mill. I headed down the hill to the gazebo to decorate and on my way back is when I met Caroline, Douglas' wife. These people are so passionate and it oozes from them. Friendly and inviting, before leaving we were given a tour by Douglas of the downstairs (where the mill operated) and Caroline headed us in the direction of the falls at the end of their property. Outstanding and memorizing is all I can say when thinking of The Vieux Moulin in Rigaud. I will highly recommend this venue for anyone looking for an outdoor fairytale wedding. Doesnt get much better than this in my opinion. A big thank you to Caroline and Douglas for being so kind and receptive (as a florist, I know this is not always the case with certain venues) and I will be back.. maybe for my own wedding ;)

ON SET OF THE MOVIE - THE WORDS

We have been asked to do floral arrangements that appeared in television programs or local movies before but never have I had the experience of being on an American movie set, especially not one starring my crush, Bradley Cooper ;) I had to be on set for 5:30am but the excitement made it an easy jump out of bed. Most arrangements were done in advance and I tweaked them on site. I started becoming a little stressed out when the head decorator told me the table arrangements needed more greenery for a cameras view and I was close to running out.. being traffic rush hour at this point, I rushed to a wholesaler and made it back in time to fix them up for their liking. A little nail biting moment that turned out fine lol. The room was busy with dozens people from lighting to cameramen and I was in awe of what goes into filming a small scene that may or may not make it into the final movie. At one point, waiting on directions for the food platters I had to decorate, I was standing by a wall admiring the bustle, when I felt the room 'stop'.. and there stood Bradley Cooper three feet away from me. I guess I stared, thinking he didn't really look like the guy from 'the movies', wondering if he had the luck of walking to set that morning without being recognized. When I finished my job, I packed up and walked out into a sea of paparazzi, and that's when I knew he probably didnt have as peaceful a morning as I had imagined for him.

There are so many little changes going on you can certainly tell spring is here. Out with the old and in with the new! I have finally made us a facebook page which seems like the thing "to do" , not quite sure I can keep up with the twitter crowd just yet, i'll need some more convincing. I think facebook will facilitate sharing pictures and information with many of our customers. It is also a great place for people to share and post comments. Looking to grow our fan base, "like" us on facebook today!

PARTY AT THE CAISSE DE DEPOT ET PLACEMENTS DE MONTREAL

The venue was the Caisse de Depot et placements atrium. The theme was white, the look achieved was a whimsical winter wonderland. It was chic and modern and ready just in time for the 340+ guest.
We never pulled off a party of this magnitude, mostly because all 38 centerpieces (including bar area) had to be made on location. We had 7 hours and 100 sq ft of space to create magic. I said it then and I will say it again, I think my heart stopped between 2 and 4pm. I really didn't know if we would be done on time. Stresssssss!
The vases contained 6 white glitter branches adorned with pearls and approximately 6 dozen individually glued on dendrobium orchid heads. The work involved was painful but the final product was sublime. I stayed until the daylight fell so I could snap a few pictures of the lit up vases. Each vase had 3 submersible lights at different level which illuminated the glittery snow inside the vase. I would have loved to have a chance to see the tables lit up with the candles too but I was covered in glue, glitter, tears and sweat and guest were arriving, so I took the door and hoped it would look as good as I had imagined. As per the feedback, it looked better than the client imagined. Yay!

The combination of white on green is one that makes my heart sing. Simple, elegant, subdued it is perfect for any decor or occasion.
There are quite a few green flowers on the market. A new favorite of the shop is the "Mondial" rose. It's a perfect shade of soft green with a rich creamy center and it develops beautifully.

A little late on the well wishes but I have had so little time to update the blog. The month of December was crazy busy! We took some well needed R&R after the holidays and closed for a couple of days. The closure also had much to do with the lack of fresh flowers available on the market between Christmas and New Years...

By far one of my favorite venues for an intimate and elegant wedding. The rooms are charming with an old antique feel. Built in 1916 the architecture of this imposing home is stunning. Built on the banks of Lake St-Louis, the hall now owned by the city of Pointe-Claire, offers beautiful well kept grounds to take pictures and provides a majestic feel for your guest.

There are many reasons we choose not to carry dyed fresh flowers, the number 1 reason being that there are sooooo many pretty natural ones, why mess with nature? Then there's also the fact that it makes vase water so icky and frankly we just ain't fans of florescent blue and orange and pink flowers.
When I first saw this cymbidium orchid at the wholesaler I was in awe by the beauty of its contrasting colors. I had never seen anything like it, I knew there were several dozen varieties available to the cut flower market but I still manage to be surprised every once in a while. It wasn't till I returned to the shop that I noticed the water in the tube was red.. clear indicator of present dye. I had been fooled and so was everyone else. It was still more than perfect to use in one of our designs and I can't say I wouldn't purchase another stem if I had the use for it...

Peonies are so delicately beautiful. When the first batch arrive from Holland in early spring my heart palpitates. The fragrance, the softness of tissue like petals, they have a certain romantic feel to them.
For this arrangement (which I made for myself :) I paired them with a soft peachy pink carnation. Makes me happy.

PINK ANTHURIUMS

Anthuriums (the lovely heart shaped flower) are a tropical flower with a long vase life (15 to 30days). I have personally kept anthuriums for up to 6-7 weeks but it depends on the variety. Mini and small anthuriums tend to have a shorter vase life. Like all tropical flowers they love humidity and will appreciate regular mist of water. Anthuriums are sensitive to cold and are not stored in the cooler. Any temperature below 15C will blacken the flower.

In this arrangement we have the pink anthuriums (variety unknown) pink hydrangeas, white peonies, "Caroline Tenson" white lilies and alliums.

ALOCASIA aka ELEPHANT EAR PLANT

To add some depth and texture to this arrangement we trimmed a few leaves off an Alocasia plant we had in the boutique. We actually trimmed a fern too :) Add some smashing orchids (notice how the flower has a white outline- very pretty) and some asplenium leaves for some drama. We all love drama.

A SPARKLY WINTER WEDDING

The wedding took place on what seemed like the coldest day of the year... so far! Moving flowers in -33 windchill is no walk in the park. The flowers were delivered to the bride at the Auberge Le Saint-Gabriel- www.lesaint-gabriel.com - in the Old Port and the ceremony was being held just down the street at the Basilica. The bride envisioned herself carrying her bouquet with her on the walk to the church but I had to explain that they just would not resist the cold for a fraction of a second. All bouquets were packed tight in paper and thick plastic and then carefully placed into a box. The logistics of a winter wedding for a florist are enough to induce a migraine. The staff at the Auberge were amazing, as always. They helped wherever they could to make the transition from the truck to the hall without any freezer burn. :)

The brides bouquet (shown above) is composed of white chrysanthemums, white hydrangea, white ranunculus, white tulips and white freesia. At her request we sprinkled the flowers with a little silver glitz.

The Maid of Honor bouquet (shown below) is designed of white hydrangea, white freesia, white tulips and white alstromeria.

Veronique is the sister of a very good friend of mine, Sebastien who is also owner and main photographer for www.saphoto.ca I felt so blessed and honored to do the flowers for her wedding to Guillaume. The wedding took place in Quebec so finishing touches had to be done on site.
Not many brides can carry off such a dark bouquet but Veronique pulled it off perfectly. She has a spanish flair to her with her dark hair and olive skin. Her bouquet was composed of Rosa Prima "freedom" roses, "Mikado" spray roses, "Ticuna" carnations- What? carnations in a wedding bouquet? yes they add beautiful texture - finishing touches include seeded eucalyptus and veriegated pitt

Standing at 40cm tall this bouquet is packed with tradition and numbers. 11/27/07 THE GIFT - Emmett Marion -- then a combat sergeant in New Guinea during World War II -- arranged to have a dozen red roses sent to his mother at her home in Mt. Airy, NC on Mother's Day. His mom cried all day, so touched was she that her son would take time in a war zone to do such a thing.

"The Gift" is a series about the things we've received, the things we've given, the things we remember. In big ways and small, they are gifts that have changed our lives. The day he and the others left for World War II, Emmett Marion looked out the window as the bus rolled past his house outside Mount Airy. There, by the side of the road, waving and crying, was his mother.
Auta Jane Marion had already lost two of her seven children: a boy at age 4, a girl in infancy. Now her second-born -- she nicknamed him "Sweet Boy" -- had been drafted into the Army Air Corps and was bound for the South Pacific.
To New Guinea, as it turned out. A sweltering island of jungles, coconuts and exotic birds -- quite a change from his family's 25-acre farm, with its vegetable garden, and pigs and chickens.
Pfc. Marion sent a portion of his $50-a-month pay back to North Carolina. And he told his family that where he was stationed, malaria was a bigger threat than Japanese bullets.
He was wearing uniforms now, not the clothes his mother had made him over the years. But he clung to gifts from her that helped form the young man he had become. He traced his religious faith to those Sundays when Mom would gather her children together, then read -- and explain -- the Bible to them. Marion's sense of sharing with others came from his mother, too -- he remembered all those times, during the Depression, when she had fed wandering hobos on their front porch. She never let anybody go hungry.
And then there was the certainty of her love, which he cherished during this time away from home.
As Mother's Day 1944 approached, Marion, inspired by the enchanting odors of the island's strange but beautiful flowers, got an idea. If I send you the money, he wrote his brother Curtis, would you hitchhike to the florist in Mount Airy and get Mom a dozen red roses?
His mother grew flowers and she traded cuttings with neighbors. But he was sure nobody had ever given her a store-bought bouquet.
Not Dad. Until they moved to the farm, Roscoe Marion had made 33 cents an hour at Mount Airy Mantle and Table. From that he had to pay $6 in rent for their mill house and other expenses. Their food came from some livestock and a vegetable garden (Mom canned lots of vegetables) and Mom also made most of their clothes.
Probably the only time she had even seen flowers from a florist was at a funeral. No, she'd led a lean life as far as luxuries go.
Marion sent his brother a $15 money order.
On Mother's Day, half a world away, Mom got her roses from the son she hadn't seen in more than a year.
And she cried all day.
Marion made it back to Mount Airy just before Christmas 1945. The snow was ankle-deep. Mother was so happy to see him.
She didn't mention the roses -- not then and not once before her death in 1981.

A "GREEN" WEDDING

I just finished reading a very interesting article in the Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 edition of the Montreal Gazette. It spoke of brides and grooms going green for their wedding and how they might achieve it. Some may say its radical but if you choose just one item on the list, you are contributing to reducing waste that is too often the case of many weddings.

Here's a list of environmentally friendly options for your wedding (from the Montreal Gazette and "Eco-Chic weddings" by Emily Elizabeth Anderson).

The rings: I myself was shocked to read that a single gold ring can generate up to 20 tonnes of mine waste. Diamonds often originate from areas in Sub-Saharan Africa where the "profits" are used to fund guerrilla military activity.

Opt instead for faux diamonds or recycled gold. Have a two for one and have your engagement ring serve as your wedding band as well.

The gown: A wedding dress can take up to 15 metres of fabric or more. Very often it's made in China using child labor and/or harmful chemicals.

Go local! buy something made in Quebec. Choose a dress that you could possibly alter and wear again. Think organic cotton, hemp, silk or linen - all sustainable, naturally produced fabrics. Consider renting a dress or wearing a recycled one.

The bridal registry: Create a registry to cut down on unwanted gifts you'll never use. Or be totally selfless and ask for charitable donations in lieu of gifts.

The invitations: Consider a simple invitation, using tree free or chlorine free paper. Some companies (The Crane stationary company) offer wedding invitations made of organic cotton. Include a "please recycle" note on the back. Another option which I was introduced to at a friends wedding was paper with seeds embedded in it so that guests could plant the invitations and enjoy the flowers/herbs that grow from them. Or simply send e-vites.

Flowers: Organic (environmentally responsible growing methods, use of recycling and proper waste disposal) flowers are available ask your local florist what they can obtain for your wedding day.

The menu: It is humanly impossible to eat everything at most weddings. It's way too much even if you've been saving room for days and tons of it ends up in the dumpster after the party is over.

Simplify the menu. Have guest return home with leftovers in reusable containers or donate the leftovers to your local food bank.

The latin name ranunculus means "little frog". The word refers to the swampy ground where many types of the flower grow. This is one little frog I find very difficult to resist. One of my favorite flowers by far. I love the pink ones, and the white ones, and the yellow... I love them all! They are so delicate and oh so beautiful, their petals almost like tissue paper. They are just perfect on their own so you can admire their curvy stems and their plump blooms or just as beautiful tucked in with other spring flowers. These bulb grown blossoms are available all year round through imports but the peak season is December to end of May (best value). Care Tips: Remove all foliage, recut stems and change water regularly. The stems are inclined to buckle. If you don't want them curvy, insert a flower wire to keep them upright or cut the stems short.

WHAT'S IN BLOOM?

Spring is right around the corner and we are seeing more and more spring bulb flowers on the market, such as Crocus, Daffodils, Tulips and Hyacinth. Peak season is from January through May so now is the time to pick up some fresh bunches of cut tulips and or hyancinths or some potted bulb gardens. Every week we bring in a wide variety in an array of colors.

Potted bulbs. Remove all plastic wrapping and check soil moisture. We often cover the earth with moss, you may leave all or none or you may simply remove it. Moss helps to maintain even soil moisture and humidity around the plant. If your plant did not come with a pot and saucer, we recommend you place it in one with proper drainage.

Bulb basket care (pre-planted) Your plant will need 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Once the foliage breaks the soil, keep the pot cool and remove it from direct sunlight. This will promote stronger and shorter stems. The flowers will bloom for 1-2 weeks.

Planting the bulbs (Hyacinths, Daffodils and Crocus) Remove the spent flowers and allow the foliage to grow for 6-8 weeks. Reduce watering until the foliage withers then remove the bulbs from the earth and let them dry out for a few days. Store the bulbs in an open paper bag and place them in the dark in an ideal temparature of 60F until the weather permits you to plant them outdoors. They will not bloom again till next spring.

How to care for your cut flowers

Remove any leaves that may come in contact with the water in the vase
Fill a vase with room temperature water and add floral preservative to the water.
Cut up to one inch off the flower stem. Cut at an angle. Immediately place them in water. This will allow the flower to absorb more water.
Display your flowers in a cool area and away from direct sunlight
If possible change the water daily, this will minimize bacterial growth
For longer lasting flowers you can place your vase and flowers in the refrigerator at night and remove them in the morning
Keep flowers away from ripening fruits and cigarette smoke as they produce ethylene gas and it will considerably reduce vase life.

With Valentines day quickly aproaching the flower buisness is cut throat. From everyone to local grocery stores, to super stores, to online brokers everyone is trying to cash in on the holiday. Some consumers don't take the time to think about the decision they are making when picking up a bouquet at the grocery store or by browsing the internet for the cheapest deal but florists across the country are feeling the hit and it's hurting the industry.
1800 flowers has come up with an negative ad campaign against local florists claiming their flowers are fresh from the farm (meanwhile they are busy handing out millions of dollars in coupons after settling a couple of lawsuits regarding the "fresh from the field" claim). The elegant PHALAENOPSIS ORCHID

Phalaenopsis are among the most popular orchids sold as potted plants. In your home they can last two to three months. In nature they are typically fond of warmer temperatures (20 to 35 °C) but are adaptable to cooler conditions (15 to 30 °C). At temparetures below 18 °C watering should be reduced to prevent root rot. Phalaenopsis requires high humidity (60-70%) and low light. Phalaenopsis prefer to be potted in fir bark which drains well. Overwatering and poor drainage causes the roots to deterioriate and therefore kills the plant. Light is vital to the well being of your plant. Keep it in indirect sunlight near a southern window. Direct sunlight will cause brown spots on the leaves. The green point at the end of the root signifies that it is actively growing, do not cut them! When the last flowers loses it's color, cut the stem halfway down. Continue caring for your orchid with a high nitogen fertilizer at 1 teaspoon per gallon of water and wait for a possible rebloom. (you may lucky to have it bloom up to twice a year)

Wedding flowers are one of the most important elements to tie everything together on your wedding day. Besides the brides dress, your flowers will have most guest talking.

Finding a florist If you do not already have a florist you should ask family and friends if they can recommend a professional. Visit as many florist as you wish until you feel comfortable with the designer you eventually choose. Floristry is art and art is in the eye of the beholder.
Look around the shop, do you like what you see? Are the flowers in the display cooler fresh? Is your designer honest about what he/she can provide for your wedding? (beware of those who make too many promises) Is the shop well decorated, clean, organized?

Ask to see photographs of previous work

Do your research and come prepared
If possible bring a photo of the wedding dress and the bridesmaids dresses along with color swatches. Go through many magazines and books and bookmark anything you like such as colors, textures, specific flowers and containers. Your florist should be receptive to your ideas and your vision but keep in mind that many magazines promote very expensive arrangements and as well as wedding bouquets made with some of the most delicate flowers that would not last through your big day, your florist is there to advise you.
Think of your budget before you visit any potential florists. The possibilitites are endless and without a budget the florist and yourself will be left in the dark.

Be prepared to answer the following questions:

How many bouquets do you need

CHRISTMAS TREE FAQ

Before choosing your Christmas tree you should decide where you would like to put it. Your selected space should be as far away as possible from any heat sources (TV's, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts). Clear out the space and measure the maximum width and height for your tree. Also you should measure your tree stand to determine the maximum allowable diameter for your tree trunk. Do not forget to take into consideration the height of your treetop decoration.

There are several different types of trees to consider choose the one that your heart and Christmas spirit desires.

Choosing a fresh tree could take some time. Choose the greenest tree with the least brown needles (some trees have been colored before shipping and this seems to be becoming common practice). Shake a branch or raise it and let it fall back down, if green needles fall to the ground the tree may be dehydrated. You can also run your hand down a branch, the needles should stay on the branch and not in your hand! Some trees have excellent needle retention such as the Fraser Fir and the Balsam Fir (both available in Quebec). Avoid trees that are wilted or have a greyish blue/green look. Look for any unusual brittleness or stiffness of the trees limbs, it may be an indication that the tree was cut a long time ago.

Caring for your tree

If the tree has been cut for over 4 hours you will need to recut 1 inch off the butt and place it immediately in fresh tap water (no additives are needed). Always keep the tree in water or resin will form over the cut end and it will no longer be able to drink (the tree needs up to/more than a gallon of water a day). A fresh tree if properly cared for should last at least 4-5 weeks before it starts drying out.

Buying "green"

Today most Christmas trees (about 98%) are grown on tree farms , which benefit and harm the environment. While Christmas trees grow, they replenish the air with oxygen; just one acre of Christmas trees produces enough oxygen to support eighteen people. Tree farms provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. However, pesticide use on Christmas tree farms could be decreased or eliminated for even greater environmental benefits. Due to their hardiness, Christmas trees are often planted where few other plants grow, thereby increasing soil stability. For each Christmas tree cut on tree farms, 2 or 3 new seedlings are planted.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR POINSETTIA

Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line.

Choose bracts (modified leaves) that are completely colored.

Do not purchase poinsettias with a lot of green around the bract edges.

Do not choose plants with fallen or yellowed leaves

The poinsettia should look full, balanced and attractive from all sides

The plant should be 2 1/2 times taller than the diameter of the container

Choose plants that are not drooping or wilting.

Do not purchase plants that are displayed in paper or plastic sleeves. Plants held in sleeves will deteriorate quickly and likely get root rot.

Do not purchase plants that have been displayed or crowded close together. Crowding can cause premature bract loss

When you take the poinsettia home, be sure to have it sleeved or covered when outdoor temperatures are below 50°F.
The length of time your poinsettia will give you pleasure in your home is dependent on (1) the maturity of the plant, (2) when you buy it, and (3) how you treat the plant. With care, poinsettias should retain their beauty for weeks and some varieties will stay attractive for months.

AFTER YOU HAVE MADE YOUR POINSETTIA SELECTION

Make sure it is wrapped properly because exposure to low temperatures even for a few minutes can damage the bracts and leaves.

Unwrap your poinsettia carefully and place in indirect light. Six hours of light daily is ideal. Keep the plant from touching cold windows.

Keep poinsettias away from warm or cold drafts from radiators, air registers or open doors and windows.

Ideally poinsettias require daytime temperatures of 60 to 70°F and night time temperatures around 55°F. High temperatures will shorten the plant’s life. Move the plant to a cooler room at night, if possible.

Check the soil daily. Be sure to punch holes in foil so water can drain into a saucer. Water when soil is dry. Allow water to drain into the saucer and discard excess water. Wilted plants will tend to drop bracts sooner.

Do not fertilize when it is in bloom.
